Its hard to be a baby

Henry’s Birth Story

I woke up early on the 19th of September to get some work done before my weekly prenatal appointment. At the appointment they did the NST monitoring (baby’s heartbeat and my contractions). I was contracting every 4 minutes but they were painless. The doctor came in and checked my cervix and I was still at 2cm or so (like I had been for weeks). She said my cervix was really ready and stretched me a bit and said that it might help ‘get things going.’

I went home and got back to work feeling pretty normal. Clay came home a bit early and we took a very quick trip to costco. I had a few irregular contractions at costco that I noticed and I felt really tired by the time we left. We got home and I started cooking for my meal exchange group. I made 6 cheeseburger casseroles and put one in the oven for us.

A little before 6pm George asked to play outside. I took him out and we threw the ball around a bit. Several of our neighbors also happened to be outside so we chatted with them, as well. One of them, Gillian, was our night time babysitter plan for labor. She said I looked like I was about to have the baby and I laughed.

Around 6:15pm we went inside for dinner. I started serving up and noticed contractions that were mildly painful pretty regularly. We sat down to eat and I started timing them. Every 2 minutes. Hmm….

I told Clay I wanted to go get in the bath and see if they eased up. The bath was nice, but they got worse. I didn’t think I was in labor because my water hadn’t broken like it did with George.

Clay brought George up and we started getting him ready for bed. By this time the contractions were getting very painful and my poor little boy noticed that his mommy wasn’t feeling good. It really upset him. He just kept wanting to hug me and we couldn’t get him to relax. He was crying for me and it was so hard. Much worse than the pain. I would hold him and sing during the contractions to try to calm him, but we realized that we needed to go. It was about 7:30pm and I had been contracting for about an hour.

We put the plan into action and called both Gillian and Misty. Gillian arrived first and we left at about 7:40pm. Misty came after we left and put George to bed–he knows her really well and she got him to sleep in about 15 minutes (AMAZING). Once I knew Misty was coming and Gillian could stay the night I was able to relax and focus on the labor.

We drove to the hospital and got there a little after 8pm. The whole way there I just kept telling Clay I wanted the epidural really, really bad. The pain was really intense by then and I was dying for some relief.

While Clay parked the car I walked up to L&D (with someone following me with a wheelchair, which now is comical to think about). I checked in at the desk and they asked how long I’d been contracting and I said 1.5 hours. They started to put me in triage until another contraction hit about 1 min later and I mentioned my last labor was only 4 hours. Suddenly a wheelchair appeared and I was taken directly to a delivery room.

I don’t remember a whole lot from this point–they checked me and I was 7cm. I was begging for some pain relief and they really tried to get me some, but it became pretty clear it wasn’t going to happen. Clay was incredible. He looked into my eyes and help my breathe/moan through each contraction. Some were so strong I couldn’t focus on anything, but he was always right there.

The nurses were also great–and I got my OB! With Kaiser, you have to take whomever is on call, but it happened to be my doctor. I love her, so it was wonderful to know she was there. (She even came into my room the next day to act out my labor–which was hilarious but also a little embarrassing). 🙂

I stood and labored next to the bed for awhile, but then sat on the edge of the bed because I kept thinking they would bring the epidural ANY MINUTE and I wanted to be in position. Clay said I kept saying, “I need medicine.” Ha.

But then, my water broke with shocking force and I could feel him coming into the birth canal. I scooted back onto the bed and everything in the room went nuts. They got my doctor in and she was yelling at them to break the bed down because she knew he was coming fast.

She told me to push and with one crazy animal wail and a big push his head was out. She unwrapped the cord from around his neck and and I pushed again and he was out. They put him on my bare chest and he latched on right away. I have never felt pain like that in my entire life, but it was all over and there was my boy looking up at me.

Henry James Williams was born at 8:42pm on 9/19/13 after about 2.5 hours of labor. He was 7lbs 6oz and 21 inches long. Totally perfect and healthy. And I never got my damn epidural.

George’s Baby

In preparation of the new baby we have been doing a little work with George to get him used to the idea that he will have a brother. We aren’t expecting much, of course, becuase he is so little.

However, its amazing how much he picks up from books. So, Aunt Keela got him a book by Dr Sears to show what it will be like when the baby comes. It talks about co-sleeping, breastfeeding, sharing mommy and daddy and how babies cry. George loves the book and we read it most nights.

We also got him a baby of his own so that he could practice taking care of it. We found this one at ikea. We let him pick from all the dolls and he picked one that looked A LOT like him! Very funny. 🙂

We also practice naming the body parts in English and Spanish. He can do almost every body part now in both!

Month by Month

Fun little picture of this pregnancy over the months. 🙂

months and weeks

38.5 Weeks

I’m not doing a full update because not much has changed–still pregnant.

But I had to get this a picture of myself because my belly has outgrown all of my maternity shirts. It cracks us up! My belly is definitely bigger than it was with George!

9 months!

No more than 25 days left to go! I will be induced if I don’t go into labor by my due date, so I know it won’t be longer than that! They want to be extra careful because of my first trimester test results showing that the placenta might not function well late in pregnancy. I am being monitored every week (baby’s heart rate and my contractions). Right now the baby is growing and moving like crazy, but if that changes, the plan may change.

I am 2 cm dilated and having lots braxton hicks. When I sit on the monitors for about 30 minutes once a week and I usually have quite a few contractions during that time. But they aren’t regular or painful so its clearly not the real deal. I did the same thing with George, which was nice because I spread early labor over weeks–then just kicked into gear when he was ready to go!

We are packed and have all our supplies in order!

How far along? 36 weeks

Total weight gain/loss: Up 23 pounds.

Maternity clothes? Of course. Clay loves to laugh at how my shirts no longer cover the very bottom part of my belly.

Stretch marks? A few on the very bottom part of my stomach. I was sad when I saw them! But I am bigger in the stomach than I was with G, so I guess I should be too surprised. They are very faint, so lets hope they stay that way. Clay saw them way before me, but didn’t tell me. Haha. I also have a very faint linea nigra now.

Sleep: Awful. Getting up 2-4 times per night and having trouble getting back to sleep. I just play a little plants vs. zombies and that usually helps. But the worst part is moving in bed–its just so painful with my pubic bone issues. 😦

Movement: Henry is very, very active.

Food cravings: Food.

Gender: boy.

Belly Button in or out? What belly button? That thing isn’t anything I recognize.

Wedding rings on or off? On. No swelling to report.

What I miss: Being comfortable.

What I am looking forward to: Seeing George with Henry. I know it will be bittersweet, but mostly sweet! I’m trying to enjoy as much alone time as I can with George right now. We are reading a book about being a big brother almost every night–he loves it and asks for it (baby book). We talk about how the baby will nurse and cry. I don’t think he knows whats coming, but I also bet more has sunk in than we give him credit for. He’s a smart little guy!

8 Months Pregnant

Not too much longer now! It’s crazy to me that we are only 2 months away. We have the nursery almost ready to go (just need some diapers!) and I have a few other things to get. We have a baby prep day planned for this weekend to get our bags packed. I also need to make some freezer meals.

I had a doctors appt yesterday and the baby looked amazing. Perfect size, great amount of fluid and we watched him practicing breathing. The doctor was so impressed that he was doing so well with the breathing practice at 32 weeks. Since I am high risk I will go every week for monitoring and fluid/size checks. But she said he was the healthiest looking baby she had seen all day and considering the number she had seen–that was saying something! She doesn’t expect any issues to come up.

How far along? 32 weeks 4 days

Total weight gain/loss: Now up about 20 pounds–Put on some good weight last month. Doctor was happy. At this rate I’ll probably gain what I did with George, about 28-30 pounds.

Maternity clothes? Oh my yes.

Stretch marks? Nope. At my doctors appt yesterday she was amazed that I didn’t have any. She actually said “I want to be you when I grow up!” She also told me to hide from other pregnant ladies. No linea nigra yet either, which is odd because I’m pretty sure I had it with G by now.

Sleep: Once I’m asleep I’m pretty good. I’m getting up once a night to pee. Getting up is SO hard though and because it’s so painful it can take me awhile to fall back asleep.

Movement: So many BIG movements. My whole stomach shudders and changes shape constantly. And this kid gets hiccups a lot!

Food cravings: Food.

Gender: boy.

Belly Button in or out? OUT

Wedding rings on or off? On. I had a tiny bit (only noticeable to me–Clay thinks its in my head) of swelling in my feet when it was super hot, but now that its cooled off I’m not having any swelling.

What I miss: Moving around with freedom. I watch Clay get in and out of bed, or roll around in bed, or get up and down off the floor with ease and I’m very jealous.

What I am looking forward to: As of Sept 2nd I will be working from home full-time. This is very nice because it makes my life a lot easier and I’m more productive because I don’t have to commute or walk incredibly slowly in and out of the building. I may sound lazy. That’s fine. Mainly I’m working from home because my labor is expected to be short and I want to stay close to my hospital. Yay!

7 months pregnant

Hello third trimester! Sometimes I feel so close to being done and other times it feels really far away. Its going to be a HOT summer. I was outside most of the day for the last few days and the heat was rough. Maybe I will move to Iceland for month of August.

We are also very firm on a name at this point. I guess anything could happen, but we are pretty sure it will be:

Henry James Williams

That’s actually the first time I’ve typed it–it looks pretty darn good!

How far along? 28 weeks 4 days

Total weight gain/loss: Now up about 14 pounds–right on track!

Maternity clothes? Yeah. I need to get them organized–think I’m still in denial.

Stretch marks? Nope. No linea nigra yet either. I can’t remember when I got it with George. It was pretty light and went away soon after delivery. Curious to see if I get it this time.

Sleep: Pretty good. Once I get settled in with all my pillows I’m usually good for the night. I’m only getting up to pee sometimes.

Movement: Constantly. He is a KICKER. George was a roller.

Food cravings: Ice cream. Dairy in general seems to be my go-to.

Gender: Big boy.

Belly Button in or out? Half way out.

Wedding rings on or off? On. Never had any swelling with G, so hopefully this will be the same.

What I miss: Not wearing a hip brace! I have to wear this stupid hip brace 24 hours a day or my pubic bone really suffers. It really helps keep my pelvis stable, but its no fun to wear it all the time.

What I am looking forward to: Getting George’s room set up for two! I’ve been thinking about the best way to do it, but its really nice that we don’t have much to do before the baby comes. George will stay in the crib until well after he is born. He doesn’t really seem ready for a toddler bed yet. Henry will be with us until he is at least 6 months, so we are trying to minimize the changes for George as much as possible. Mainly, I just need to set up the second closet for the new one and do some minor rearranging to the changing area. And get out all of the newborn items!!

6 months pregnant!

Baby is doing awesome. We had another quick scan to check growth and he is BIG. Dr isn’t worried about too big a this point, but George was a small/average sized baby so this is definitely different. I got a great look at his face and he looks like a different version of George. That was super cool. Can’t wait to meet him in person!

How far along? 24 weeks 6 days

Total weight gain/loss: Wow, eating makes a big difference. I’m up 10 pounds!

Maternity clothes? Totally in them. I still try to wear shirts that aren’t maternity, but it ain’t pretty.

Stretch marks? Nope. I didn’t get any with G, so hopefully none this time either!

Sleep: Pretty good. Not getting up to pee yet, but I wake up when I want to turn over because it hurts my pubic bone.

Movement: Constantly. I can see him from the outside now. Clay has been feeling him for a few weeks.

Food cravings: Cereal with tons of fruit and milk has been my favorite thing to eat.

Gender: A brother for George.

Belly Button in or out? Flat.

Wedding rings on or off? On. Never had any swelling with G, so hopefully this will be the same.

What I miss: Moving quickly. My pubic bone is really bothering me and its hard to get out of bed in the morning. I’m already slowing down in walking and getting things done. This doesn’t suit my personality. 🙂

What I am looking forward to: This may be a bit early…but holding this little guy! After seeing him yesterday I just couldn’t wait to snuggle him.

5 months Preggo

Half way there! Thats scary and awesome at the same time. 🙂 We had out mid pregnancy scan and it was great! Baby was moving and being adorable. I got to see his little face in 3d. Anatomy looked great and we are thrilled.

How far along? 20 weeks 3 days

Total weight gain/loss: Only 2 pounds down now! Next appt I’m sure I’ll have gained.

Maternity clothes? Brining stuff into rotation slowly. Still wearing normal pants with the belly band, but starting to need maternity shirts for the length.

Stretch marks? Nope. I didn’t get any with G, so hopefully none this time either!

Sleep: Pretty good. Still waking up early and starting to get hard to turn over.

Movement: Constantly. And he loves to kick G when I am holding him–they are wrestling already!

Food cravings: Cheese.

Gender: Little man.

Belly Button in or out? In. But getting shallow.

Wedding rings on or off? On. Never had any swelling with G, so hopefully this will be the same.

What I miss: Raw cheese. Laying on my back in bed. I don’t sleep on my back, but I like to lay on my back when I wake up and am checking emails, etc. The baby puts too much pressure on my lower back to do that! I have been having lower back pain, too and sitting/laying. It causes the preggo lady hobble. Clay likes to laugh at me. Haha.

What I am looking forward to: Going to Hawaii in about a week! More on that later…

Pregnancy Month 4

Second trimester is going well! I’m finally starting to get some relief from the HG, which is fantastic. We are having quite a bit of drama this pregnancy with all the testing, but things are still trucking along well. Baby looks great on ultrasound. Cute little bugger. Looks a lot different that George!

How far along? 17 weeks

Total weight gain/loss: Starting to gain weight back, so now only 7 pounds down.

Maternity clothes? I wear the belly band. Def have a little bump. Mom and I went to Old Navy and got some cute stuff and I got the stuff I lent out back. Won’t be long before I have to break out the big maternity guns.

Stretch marks? Nope. I didn’t get any with G, so hopefully none this time either!

Sleep: I wake up at weird times and don’t sleep super well. Yeah. already.

Movement: Feeling him move a few times a day now, getting stronger and more frequent.

Food cravings: Food is finally becoming my friend again. I’m craving a lot of pickles (so cliche), asian food and mac and cheese.

Gender: BOY

Belly Button in or out? In.

Wedding rings on or off? On. Never had any swelling with G, so hopefully this will be the same.

What I miss: Energy. Its starting to come back, but I have a HUGE list of things to do. Now I just the energy to do them.

What I am looking forward to: Looking a little more pregnant. I love the cute phase where you can really tell a woman is pregnant but she isn’t so huge that you wince when you look at her. Ha.
